The Colors of Light Therapy: Uses and Benefits

Scientific research supports this assertion, proving that different light colors provide different health, wellness, and appearance benefits.

Red Light Therapy (610 to 700nm)

Also known as low-level light therapy (LLLT), uses near infrared and red wavelengths of light to promote healing and improve cellular function. Of all types of light therapy, red and NIR light provides  the widest range of benefits. Because they penetrate your body more deeply than any other type of visible light, red and NIR wavelengths activate your body's innate healing powers and stimulate biological change at the cellular level.

How it Works:

Red light penetrates deep into the skin and stimulates the mitochondria of cells at the levels within the body, including brain cells inside your skull and cells within your bones. It even activates the production of new stem cells. Increased cellular energy allows your body to access its peak level of healing and rejuvenation, providing benefits including but not limited to:

Benefits:

  • Skin Health - Red light therapy can help reduce inflammation, promote collagen production, and improve skin texture and the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation and tone. It can help with wrinkles and fine lines, ache, sun damage and even stretch marks.
  • Wound Healing - It can accelerate wound healing by stimulating cell growth and angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation)
  • Pain Management - Red light therapy can reduce pain and inflammation associated with conditions such as arthritis, muscle soreness, tendinitis, acute pain, and neuropathic pain along with others.
  • Improved Brain Health - Red light therapy works by increasing blood flow and oxygenation to the brain. When the light is absorbed by mitochondria there is a downstream effect of improving vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) allowing for improved delivery of nutrient rich blood to the brain. Protons in the red and NIR wavelengths have the potential to improve subnormal, cellular activity of brain tissue that has been damaged by brain trauma.
  • Bones - Red light therapy can help increase bone density and improve bone healing. It also helps with osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to weaken and break more easily. Red light therapy can help prevent serious fractures, increase bone mineral density and bone structure. RLT can increase osteoblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and bone neoformation.
  • Hair Growth - Red light therapy works by stimulating hair follicles, which are the cells that produce hair. The red light penetrates the scalp and activities enzymes that provide cell growth and division. This can lead to increased hair thickness, density, and overall hair growth.
  • Weight-loss Management - Red light therapy can stimulate your metabolism, burn fat, and reduce cellulite. It can also help decrease your appetite.

Orange Light Therapy (590 - 610nm)

It has many benefits, including improving mood, skin health, and pain relief. Studies have also shown that it may improve cognitive function, and bone formation, increase your motivation, boost the immune system and boost energy along with confidence.

Orange Light Therapy is sometime called "The Wisdom Ray" because it's a blend of red and yellow, combining physical energy with mental wisdom.

  • Improved Mood and Energy - Orange light therapy is believed to positively impact mood by stimulating mental activity, promoting a sense of optimism, and generally providing a warm, uplifting feeling., often associated with increased energy and creativity; essentially acting as a mood booster due to its perceived "positive" color association. Boosting creativity, increasing energy levels, improved self-esteem and reducing feelings of depression.
  • Skin Health - Orange light therapy can improve skin health by reducing redness, stimulating collagen production, and rejuvenating skin. It can also help with skin tones, elasticity, and inflammation. Reduces redness and irritation, helps prevent dry skin, stretch marks, and is suitable for all skin types.
  • Immune System - Orange light therapy is believed to positivity impact the immune system by boosting overall energy levels, improving mood, and potentially stimulating the body's natural defenses against illness.
  • Improved Cognitive Function - Orange light therapy may potentially improve cognitive function by increasing alertness and brain activity, with studies showing that exposure to orange light can lead to greater brain activity in regions associated with cognition and alertness., particularly in the frontal lobes; making it a possible too; to enhance thinking abilities. In elderly with cognitive impairment, orange light has been shown to improve blood flow and , thereby, cognitive function. Domains of cognitive function, such as memory, executive function (planning and impulse control) and overall cognitive function.
  • Pain Relief - Orange light therapy is considered to potentially help with pain relief by increasing blood circulation and promoting healing in the affected area, making it beneficial for muscle and joint pain, arthritis, and muscle spasms; essentially working by stimulating cellular activity through its specific wavelength of light. It is believed to penetrate the skin and stimulate the production of nitric oxide, which helps to dilate blood vessels and improbe blood flow to the targeted area, thereby reducing inflammation and pain associated with muscle pain relief, arthritis pain management, wound healing, menstrual cramps and improved lymphatic drainage.
  • Reduces Redness - Can help calm irritated skin and reduce redness associated with conditions like rosacea.

Yellow Light Therapy (570 to 590nm)

Yellow light therapy is used to increase wound healing, collagen induction, skin hydration and the overall health of the skin. Often used in skincare treatments, primarily works by stimulating collagen production within the the skin, leading to improved skin texture, reduced appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and more even skin town; it also has soothing effects, helping to reduce inflammation, redness, and the appearance of dark spots by increasing blood flow to the treated area.

The anti-inflammatory properties present in yellow light therapy makes it fantastic option with sensitive skin. It reduces irritation and strengthens the skin's natural barrier. It's much less reactive triggers and promotes overall skin health.

  • Reduces Signs of Aging - by boosting collagen production, yellow light therapy can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.
  • Improves Skin Texture - It promotes smoother, more even skin tone by stimulating cell regeneration.
  • Treats Skin Concerns like Redness/Rosacea - It calms inflammation and reduces redness. It helps strengthen capillary walls, reduces the appearance of flashing and broken blood vessels.
  • Dryness - Increases the skin's ability to hold hyaluronic acid and water. In turn this increases the skin's hydration and amplifies your current skincare.
  • Breakouts - Works as a preventative measure for future breakouts by reducing inflammation and targeting the bacteria known as P acnes that contribute to ache formation.
  • Heals Wounds - Can help heal wounds by stimulation collagen production, increasing blood circulation, and reducing inflammation.
  • Improved Skin Health - Strengthens the skin's nature barrier, reduces redness and calms irritation.
  • Improved Blood Circulation - Can enhance blood flow to the treated area, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells.
  • Cellular Rejuvenation - This increased blood flow and energy stimulation can lead to better skin cell turnover and overall skin health.

Green Light Therapy: (495 to 570nm)

Green light therapy has a wide variety of potential uses based on early research into its contributions to better sleep, pain relief by stimulating the body's natural pain-reducing mechanisms, making it beneficial for conditions like rosacea, sun damage, and post-surgical pain. Green light causes the small blood vessels that lie beneath the skin to close down and disappear. therefore, making their appearance less visible.

  • Headaches - Reduces headaches frequency: Green light exposure can reduce the number of headache days per month by about 60%. Shortens headache duration: Green light can shorten the length of migraine headaches.
  • Pain Management - Green light therapy is beneficial for pain management, as it can stimulate the body's natural pain relief system by increasing the production of endogenous opioids, potentially acting as a noninvasive, non-pharmacological method to reduce pain intensity, particularly in conditions like chronic pain or post-surgical pain and fibromyalgia.
  • Mood Regulation - Studies suggest that green light therapy may improve mood and reduce systems of depression and anxiety.
  • Skin Conditions - Green light therapy can help treat a variety of skin conditions,  including hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and ache. Green lights are absorbed by melanin in the skin, which can help reduce dark spots and even out skin tone. Green light can also reduce inflammation and redness. It penetrates the upper layers of the skin and targets melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin.

- Hyperpigmentation: Green light can reduce the appearance of dark spots and age spots.

- Rosacea: Green light can soothe inflamed or irritated skin.

- Acne: Green light can treat acne and kill bacteria.

- Pain Relief of Skin: Green light can relieve pain associated with skin conditions like acne, sunburns, and other skin irritation.

- Wound Healing: Green light can cause small blood vessels to close down and disappear.

  • Other Applications - Green light therapy is also being explored for its potential anti-aging effects and its ability to boost the immune system.

Blue Light Therapy: (450 to 495nm)

Blue Light therapy is most commonly used to treat sun damage and premalignant or malignant sin cancer growths. It can actually be used to prevent skin cancer and remove both precancerous skin lesions and cancerous skin lesions that haven't spread to other areas of the body (or metastasized)

  • Skin Cancer Growth - Blue light therapy, also known as photodynamic therapy, can treat malignant and premalignant skin cancers. It can also help prevent skin cancer. It treats actinic keratosis, a precancerous skin lesion caused by skin exposure.
  • Decreased appearance of varicose veins and spider veins.
  • Healing of sun damage.
  • Skin Conditions - Acne: blue light can kill acne-causing bacteria, reducing inflammation and breakouts.
  •  Eczema and Psoriasis - Blue light can reduce inflammation and itching in these skin conditions.
  • Skin Rejuvenation - Blue light can stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture and reducing signs of aging.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder - Blue light therapy can improve mood and sleep in people with SAD.
  • Jaundice in newborns - Blue light can help break down bilirubin, a yellow pigment that causes jaundice.
  • Wound Healing - Blue light therapy can promote cell growth and healing of wounds.
  • Sun Damaged Skin - Blue light can help reduce wrinkles,, age spots, and other signs of sun damage.

Purple Light Therapy: (440 to 460nm)

Purple light therapy penetrates your body to the lower epidermis (outermost skin layer). It is a calming, cool color that reduces inflammation, increases skin cell generation, and kills bacteria. Purple light kills bacteria, making it a successful acne treatment.

  • Improved Skin Tone - Purple light therapy can help even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation.
  • Reduced Inflammation - The purple light therapy has anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful in reducing skin redness and swelling.
  • Skin Cell Generation - Purple light therapy promotes skin cell generation by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin within the skin, primarily by reducing inflammation and aiding in wound healing, making it particularly beneficial for post-procedure ski or areas with the active acne blemishes; essentially, the light energy absorbed by the skin cells triggers a cellular response to regenerate and repair tissue.

White Light Therapy:

Sunlight is a necessary source of natural Vitamin D. The UVB rays in sunlight get synthesized by the human body to make Vitamin D. Of course, wearing UV blocking sunscreen means the body will not create Vit D.

Sunlight also boosts your body's production of serotonin. A lack of natural sunlight can cause listlessness, sleep problems, and certain forms of depression.

Bright white light is useful for replacing the natural sunlight that you may not get enough of, due  to today's predominantly indoor lifestyles and durning winter months when the days are shorter. While light can elevate your mood, boost your energy level, and help with concentration. While it won't create Vitamin D with ultraviolet light, it has various other advantages.

White light therapy, also known as phototherapy, can treat a verity of conditions, including mod disorders, sleep disorders, and acne.

  • Bright white light is useful for replacing the natural sunlight that you may not get enough of due to today's predominantly indoor lifestyle and during winter months when days are shorter.
  • White light therapy can elevate your mod, boost your energy level, and help with concentration.
  • White light therapy can treat circadian rhythm disorders.
  • White light therapy can also help with jet lag and addictive behaviors such as alcohol abuse or compulsive eating.
  • By exposing the eyes to bright light, it can affect the body's internal clock located in the brain (suprachiasmatic nucleus), which regulates sleep-wake cycles.
  • White light therapy affects brain chemicals that regulate mood and sleep. It works on light-sensitive sensors in the eyes that  connect directly to the brain, it restores natural circadian rhythms.
  • White light therapy also can help treat mood disorders such as SAD and bipolar disorders.
  • White light therapy can treat sleep disorders such as insomnia.
